Another Inktober prompt. This one is for week three, and the word was "Stripes". I can't even explain how happy it made me to see "stripes". I used to draw stripes into just about every drawing I made. I also like stripes in real life too, and they can be spotted around my house on runners, crocheted blankets, clothes...chickens. (Okay, those are outside the house, but still very stripey.) Right. So for this one I wanted to take my time and make it fun. I came up with the idea of not just using a pattern of stripes, but using it as the name for this sad clown. To help get ideas for the details, I created a little story in my head about Stripes, and why he looks so sad. I imagine Stripes as being a rather poor clown, having to set up his own show with just his pig, Polly, for help. He doesn't have spectacular equipment or special effects, no budget for big showy signs. He has tacked up some posters, draped his small tent where he is allowed, (in what looks to be an abandoned, overgrown lot), and dressed in his full costume.
But then the only person who came to watch was one, striped cat, who watched the whole show Stripes put on just for her. Was the cat simply mesmerized by the juggling balls? Or did she find some solidarity with another lonely, striped creature for a day? One who didn't shoo her away, but instead gave her the perfect fish-shaped balloon? We may never know. But we do know that the cat and the clown brightened each other's day. Polly the pig, however, just looks like she wants to go home and take a nap. Once again, I picked up my yellow color in this drawing too. I like the dream-like vibe it gives with the all the striped patterns. I added a touch of blue as well to keep the balloons from being too boring. Check out the drawings for week one and week two as well!
